The Students' Olympiad on Poland and The Modern World

The Olympiad is one of the most long-standing educational undertakings of this kind. Its 45th Edition was held this year. It is organized for secondary school and technical secondary school students with the exception of post-secondary school' learners. Moreover, it is accompanied by the independently run so-called "The Olympiad Media Edition" which is organized by the Media Committee of The Olympiad in cooperation with Polish Radio BIS and "Rzeczpospolita" daily. Those wishing to take part in the "Media Edition" are asked to submit an essay on one of the questions covered by the annually altered topic.

The Committee of The Students' Olympiad on Poland and the Modern World coordinates the Olympiad. It is based at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at Warsaw University. The President of The Committee is Professor Konstanty Adam Wojtaszczyk.

The goal of the Olympiad concentrates on arousing students' interest in the complexity of socio-political background of their country and the world they live in. Participants should comprehend current processes guiding the above mentioned as well as master the syllabuses covering the social sciences' courses given in secondary schools, known as WOS.

The Olympiad traditionally consists of 2 parts:

  1. The invariable list of essential topics.
  2. The annually altered topic (in 1997, it was "Poland's way towards the NATO and the EU", in 1998 - "The society and the market economy", in 1999 - "Christianity in the modern world", in 2000 - "The media in the modern state", in 2001 - "Poland's relations with its neighbours", in 2002 - "Poland and the EU". This year's edition focused on the topic "The political culture in democratic society " whereas for the next year a " The EU regional policy" topic was proposed.
There are nearly 17 thousand students taking part in the Olympiad in each year's edition.
